Cherries make a perfect high energy snack during a long hike. When you take the time to dehydrate them yourself, you will be rewarded with the flavor of summer in each bite. Eat them as is, or mix them in to oatmeal or a homemade gorp.
The most time consuming part is pitting the cherries. I use a paperclip, bent at the tip to remove the pits. Take your time, put on some music and it will be over before you know it. Once pitted, distribute cherries evenly over dehydrating trays (with mesh liners) and dry at 135 degrees for about 10 hours.
