Some friends and I went for a lovely fall hike yesterday up to Alta Peak.  It gave me an opportunity to try some new easy to eat snacks, including Fuel100 Electro-Bites.

Fuel100 Electro-Bites

We took Fuel100 Electro-Bite flavors: Salty Vanilla and Apple Cinnamon with us on our scramble up to Alta Peak.

This past summer we spent a lot of time in the mountains scrambling and alpine climbing.  It’s hard to get the right balance of calories and nutrition when you’re working that hard for extended periods of time.  And when you are on a glacier, sometimes you don’t have time to sit and eat a snack.  We ended up eating a lot of energy gel type things, and I was getting pretty tired of the sweet, sugary flavors.  So, I was pretty excited to learn about Fuel100’s Electro-Bites.  They are a savory and crunchy alternative to gels.

Designed for endurance sports, they are definitely not a typical snack.  We stopped for a rest break at Rachel Lake and opened up the Salty Vanilla and Apple Cinnamon flavors.  The little pellets had a good flavor, a nice bit of salt, and not too sweet.  They dissolved quickly in your mouth, so not a lot of chewing needed.  We all agreed that they would be great if you were in the middle of a push up a steep slope, or roped up on a climbing team and working really hard.

With a simple ingredient list that includes potato starch, agave, and coconut oil, they are gluten and refined sugar free.  My favorite flavor was the Salty Vinegar.  It was the most savory (so least like all the other energy products out there).  But even the Apple Cinnamon and Vanilla were a savory/sweet combo.

You can definitely tell they contain electrolytes.  Be sure to sip on water when your snacking!

If you are an endurance athlete, or participate in high endurance activities like alpine climbing and mountaineering, you might want to try adding these to your kit.  I’m looking forward to trying them on my next climb.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received Electro-Bites for free from Fuel100 Electro-Bites in consideration for a gear review.
